Calm Your Tits (Literally)

by Charlotte Powers

Recently a runner mentioned that her sports bras weren’t working for her anymore and were older than her oldest child. Said child was not a toddler but closing in on double digits. I immediately recommended that she invest in some new bras, and she said, “they still work”, and I responded with “obviously they don’t if they aren’t comfortable for you anymore.”

There are a few telltale signs that you need a new (or different) bra. One is chafing. The dreaded painful scalding in the shower that makes your family come running thinking you have encountered a serial killer behind the curtain. If you are chafing around your bra line, that is a sign that the band has been stretched out and is no longer giving you the support you need. Another sign is pain in your chest. Did you know that unsupported breasts can move up to almost FIVE inches?! That’s almost half a foot! If your sports bra isn’t giving you the support you need, this can mean your breasts are moving too much and can cause the chest, back, and shoulder muscles to become strained. Smaller chest ladies aren’t off the hook either, you still need to have support especially when doing high impact activities such as running. Having the right sports bra will protect the tissues and prevent the dreaded sagging that often comes with age, having children, and… you guessed it improper support.

Did you know that bras (sports and regular) shouldn’t have birthdays? So that means when you come in for a new pair of shoes, you should be getting a new bra (or two) as well. While many women will wear the same size sports bra as their regular bra, because of the compression offered some will find their size differs. That is why we offer one-on-one personalized fitting in the store and can offer guidance on what style and impact design would work best for you. Just like with shoes, what works for one person may not work for another, so that is why we are available to guide you in the process!

Final tip: To extend the life of your sports bras make sure you wash them in a lingerie bag, on cold, and then air dry them.
